The main difference between the odds of winning the lottery and the odds of getting struck by lightning is that that we want one to happen but not the other. We are however in control (to some extent) of both of these things.

So today I wanted to talk to you about that well worn phrase, “you’re more likely to get struck by lightning, than win the lottery”.

It’s normally quoted by (somewhat smug) people who don’t play the lottery, as kind of a way to suggest you’re crazy to actually play it.

And yes, it’s a fun phrase.

But what’s the truth here – are you more likely to win the lottery or get struck by lightning?

Well, the fact is, this blanket phrase ignores a whole bunch of things:-

• Which lottery game? The odds vary dramatically.
• Which country? Lightning storms are far less common in some places than others.
• Which person? If you rarely go outside, you’re very unlikely to get hit by lightning!

According to the US National Weather Service, the chances of being struck by lightning within your lifetime are about 1 in 15,300.

Sounds pretty scary, right?

But this is of course an average. Across 330 million people. In a country that gets a lot of storms.

E, o mais importante, algumas pessoas fazem coisas estúpidas (sim, eu sei, difícil de acreditar não é ...).

O que, é claro, faz suas chances de ganhar na loteria, muito melhor do que ser atingido por um raio!

Mas ei, a linha inferior é essa.

1. Obviamente, você quer evitar ser atingido por um raio.Porque não é divertido.Portanto, seja sensato em torno de tempestades de raios (lembre -se: quando trovões rugirem, vá para dentro de casa!).
2. É bom ganhar a loteria.Então, se você quiser 'alguma' chance disso, precisará comprar um ingresso.Mas não apenas jogue o que é grande e brilhante.Escolha seu jogo com sabedoria.
